Juneteenth: Celebration of Freedom

FreeJoin us for a walk through historic Ashland, Ohio, and learn about the holiday called Juneteenth. This celebration of freedom marks the official end of slavery in the United States. On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, the Ashland County Historical Society, Ashland Main Street, and the Juneteenth Committee will be holding an evening of freedom celebration with the walking tour beginning promptly at 4:00 p.m., followed by ice cream and cupcakes!
The event starts at the Ashland County Historical Society with a tour of Ashland’s historic district as it was during the Civil War. Guests will be entertained by portrayers who will talk about the sentiment in our community at the time. Learn about Lorin Andrews, the first person to volunteer for the Civil War, and see his birthplace. Hear the opinions of local religious leaders and see how future presidents and other dignitaries influenced the call to war and abolition. Experience Ashland’s Courthouse Square and the stories about the statues and artifacts right on our courthouse lawn. Hear what soldiers from Ashland thought about their war experience and why freed slaves moved to Hayesville after the war.
The walking tour will end at the Historical Society with ice cream and cupcakes for all. In addition, guests will be able to see actual relics from this period at the museum.
