105 West Main Street

We all know it now as the Uniontown Brewing Company, but Ashland citizens once knew the building at 105 West Main Street as the home of a few other very successful businesses over the years.

Ashland Cemetery

Despite the current stay at home orders and social distancing practices, a nice walk to get out of the house and breathe some fresh air is something we can still do. Many locals routinely walk at the Ashland Cemetery, and it’s certainly an interesting place to take a stroll and educate yourself about local history.

Speaker Series – Louis Bromfield with John Anderson

April 25, 2024 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Join us at the Freer Home as we welcome John Anderson who will give a first-person portrayal of Louis Bromfield. Literature comes to life in the performances and scholarship of John Dennis Anderson, an accomplished oral interpreter who presents biographical performances of America’s greatest authors. As a Professor Emeritus at Emerson College, Anderson has taught and continues to publish in the academic field of performance studies and serves as a consultant on living history performance. Since 1994, Anderson has been developing and presenting living history (or Chautauqua) performances as the authors Henry James, William Faulkner, Robert Frost, Washington Irving, Ernest Hemingway, Louis Bromfield, Henry Beston, and Lynn Riggs. He has performed in over a dozen states, in venues from the Boston Athenaeum to the Seattle Public Library. No stranger to Ashland, Anderson has performed several of these characters at the annual Ashland Chautauqua event at the Myers Memorial Band Shell.

Juneteenth: Celebration of Freedom

June 19, 2024 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Join us for a walk through historic Ashland, Ohio, and learn about the holiday called Juneteenth. This celebration of freedom marks the official end of slavery in the United States. On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, the Ashland County Historical Society, Ashland Main Street, and the Juneteenth Committee will be holding an evening of freedom celebration with the walking tour beginning promptly at 4:00 p.m., followed by ice cream and cupcakes!
The event starts at the Ashland County Historical Society with a tour of Ashland’s historic district as it was during the Civil War. Guests will be entertained by portrayers who will talk about the sentiment in our community at the time. Learn about Lorin Andrews, the first person to volunteer for the Civil War, and see his birthplace. Hear the opinions of local religious leaders and see how future presidents and other dignitaries influenced the call to war and abolition. Experience Ashland’s Courthouse Square and the stories about the statues and artifacts right on our courthouse lawn. Hear what soldiers from Ashland thought about their war experience.
The walking tour will end at the Historical Society with ice cream and cupcakes for all. In addition, guests will be able to see actual relics from this period at the museum.
The event is free and open to the public. In the event of rain, the celebration will take place at the Ashland County Historical Manor House at 414 Center Street, Ashland, Ohio 44805. You may call the museum at 419-289-3111 for additional information. Come and learn about Ashland like never before!
